Leading By Example

As Ms. Wheelchair Massachusetts 2007, I plan to "lead by example." I am representative of many disabled women who are active, healthy, and lead full, meaningful lives. I graduated from college, have a great job, a wonderful family, and live independently.

I have always been socially and recreationally active, but last year I added Physical Fitness to my lifestyle. I joined the South Shore YMCA Partnership Program, work out regularly, and feel significant physical improvement. I also met a group of upbeat, positive peers who have become friends, and opened up new avenues for me I never thought were possible after all these years of using a wheelchair.

Disabled people must continually work for real integration and to make a full life. We are the first generation of “Americans with Disabilities” to be recognized under the law, and because of this we bear a responsibility. That is, not only to break down barriers for people with disabilities , but to lead by example.
