CANTON - A new Ms. Wheelchair Massachusetts, Kristen McCosh of South Boston, was crowned yesterday at the Massachusetts Hospital School, following in the footsteps of pageant founder Laurel Labdon of Brewster.
McCosh, who has a summer home and in-laws in Falmouth, will compete nationally this summer in Washington, D.C., in a contest that hinges on her accomplishments and abilities to be a spokeswoman for the rights of the disabled, she said.
Yesterday, McCosh competed with four other contestants in face-to-face interviews with judges, a prepared speech and questioning before an audience.
''We are the first generation of Americans with disabilities to be recognized under the law, and because of this we have a responsibility,” McCosh said. ''That is, not only to break down barriers for women with disabilities but also to lead by example.”
The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed by Congress in 1990.
Massachusetts pageant founder Labdon attended yesterday's event as well. She was a finalist in the national competition in 2005. Last year, Ms. Wheelchair Massachusetts Autumn Grant of Attleboro won the national contest.
About 30 women will compete nationally this year, Labdon said.
